ORU Fall Revival Review, Session III

"So we're going to do something different this morning," he announced.  At the sound of this, I rejoiced.  Really? Something different?  Hurray!  Eagerly, I sat up in my seat, attentive, ready to listen; waiting for Dr. Rutland to make his next move.  He's going to do something different, he's going to do something  different, I repeat to myself during these moments of anticipation.

And so Rutland...in his entire predictability...insinuated a manipulative apology in his introductory speech about accepting different styles of worship, and on not letting the negatives - which seem to carry themselves about so commonly with guest speakers - affect you.  Dude, if you're so worried about what other people thought of the speaker last night - or if you're worried about how we think about revival in general - don't pretend that you're not worried, and hide everything under a blanket of abstractions.  Just admit openly that you're concerned about the way we felt about it all, and then give in to our wishes.  Grant us the option of not attending chapel, and stop feeling insecure about the decisions YOU MAKE, <MR. PRESIDENT>

Well, I shouldn't be so harsh I suppose.  He was considerate about the students...

And letting us leave early was a first step, and I definitely applauded him - or the board members, I don't know - for taking it.  Well done, everybody.

[All these reviews has got me thinking...do I currently follow #twapel?  Time to unleash my "cynical energies" is what that means, I guess.]
